Nodule – Flint Sculpture

€2,500.00

A galactic stone piece, where a pale and rough flint exterior is combined with an exposed inner glass-like core. Each sculpture is about uncovering what’s already within the material.

Dimentions: 400MM X 270MM X 130MM

Ed Coveney is a boundary maker; balancing stone is his language, his passion, and his livelihood. Boundaries delineate space, claim territory, and define landscapes. Whether urban or rural, stone boundaries express statements of endurance – a legacy of human endeavour and shared knowledge.

In creating a boundary, each stone is appraised, turned, and examined for its suitability, weight, form, and colour. It is often reshaped, hewn, or split before being wedged into a cavity, where it will sit and support the length or height of an evolving structure. Each stone has its own characteristic, carrying stories of its formation long before man existed in the landscape. They are time capsules of geological changes, catalogues of place and of earth’s activity.

Flint, with its chalky, rounded organic forms, is the most alien of them all. Almost ceramic in appearance, the surface hides a magical interior where mottled streaks and rings are embedded in a translucent dark mass. With polishing, this galactic-like stone becomes silky, shiny, seductive, and intriguing.

By slowly exposing the inner stories of individual stones, Ed Coveney opens up portals to another time, one that reveals the earth’s movements often for first time in millennia.
